A
fashion statement for kilts?
The sporran. If you were to ask
most people, they could not tell you what it is, let alone where one might find
one. Yet as unknown as it is, let a
Scotsman wear his kilt without one, and people will notice.
O.K. let us clear up the mystery. The
sporran is the "leather bag" which is worn on the front of the kilt.
Many people I have talked to refer to it as a wallet on a chain, or a
purse/pocket for the Scotsman since the kilts have no pockets.
Sporrans can be of various colors and materials.
I have seen black, brown, and even a blue one.
I have seen gray and white pony skin, and horsehair sporrans.
Recently I was asked how a sporran was to be worn, and purchased.
I can recommend one place very highly.
J. Higgins, Ltd. As to how to buy it, that will depend on what you can afford
and your personal taste. Whenever
you order, make sure to order a sporran strap.
It can either be all leather, or leather with chain.
You will need this to wear your sporran.
Without it, you are in essence trying to wear a sword without a sheath.
It just doesn't work. When
you do wear it, keep it centered over your pelvis if possible.
You can use it for many different things, but primarily keep your tobacco
in it. Although this is a small
article, I pray it will help some with their problem.
In a future column, I will go over the proper way to take measurements
for a kilt. Take care.
