New Questions

This page is for new questions which are posed to TR!LM.
In some cases I have been unable to respond because of incorrect email addresses.
So for those answers, and some which may be of more general interest I have created this page.

Q: 4 July 2001
I had a question regarding your website.  I am looking for the answer to a
question regarding colors used by the women during the Civil War time-frame
for dresses/gowns.  Were there any particular colors that women did NOT use?
I have been told two different answers regarding the color red. One says it
was completely unacceptable, the other that it was acceptable, but only worn
by wealthier women of the time.  I know black/gray were mourning colors.
Are there any specs on colors used?
If so, would you please let me know or please let me know of any resources
for answers?  Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Sheri M.

A:
You pose a question which I never researched in depth before.
I would reference you to Smoke & Fire http://www.smoke-fire.com/ for some
suggestions on clothing colors and materials used.
In many of the articles referenced in The Reenactor! I had spent
considerable time utilizing the VMI resources which are available, including
the vaults where actual clothing, equipment, etc. is maintained. You can
also contact them Archives@vmi.edu.
Finally, I will reference you to http://web.vmi.edu/archives/~archtml/cwinet.html
This site has some excellent links to information which in some cases is very specific.
I pray I have been of some small help.
