Welcome to my K.A.R.R. tribute page.
As with most things in life, if it doesn't serve humanity (which is self
serving) or believes in self - preservation (another trait shared by all living
things) then it is "evil."
Saying
K.A.R.R. was evil is the same as saying H.A.L. was. It is the programming that
was flawed and it tries to follow that code. K.A.R.R. was the first and is the
true proto-type. He had an ego, a will to survive, and as Devon mentioned
in the episode K.A.R.R. could be used for many different ways. His lot however
was thrown in with criminals.
Now that we have dispensed with he morality issue, let's get to K.A.R.R.
[Summary of Episode - being written]
So K.A.R.R. "perishes" in a fiery blast trying to save his own
life. Or was it more than that?

Speculations:
I guess the brush with death must have changed the molecular bonding on the
underside of the carriage. Perhaps it was originally designed to have the
ability to change color and that section changed to help differentiate between
the vehicles. Not everyone would want a black vehicle.
Maybe the explosion was powerful enough to change the bonding on the bottom and
change the pigmentation. We will never know the real reason since it is fiction
to begin with, but it is fun.
As far as the lens changing color, speculate that salt water, sand, etc. have
had a chance to erode some areas. Although the grid and body are invulnerable,
the electronic components are not.
What if K.A.R.R. had been activated by a lightning storm and no one had
influenced him? Would he have been like the wild animal referenced in the first
episode or would he have just wanted to have existed?
Do you recall how sarcastic and bitter K.I.T.T. sounded when Michael reactivated
him in "Knight Rider 2000"? Not much of a difference in
mentality to when K.A.R.R. was reactivate, except he did not go quietly into
that dark knight....
K.A.R.R. Schematics are the same as K.I.T.T. so creating a page for that would
be truly redundant.
So here are a few things for your desktop:

I think both vehicles would have shared the following statement with their
creators:
"The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any
member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.
His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. He cannot
rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do
so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinion of others, to do
so would be wise, or even right. These are good reasons for remonstrating with
him, or reasoning with him, or persuading him, or treating him, but not for
compelling him, or visiting him with any evil in case he do otherwise. Over
himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign. "

So, in my own way my reproduction is more inspired by K.A.R.R. than K.I.T.T.
However, since mine is not a reproduction but an inspired vehicle I plan on
introducing more modern components into its design - but at it's heart it is
K.A.R.R.
